The Essential Guide to AfroPreak in Baltimore at Preakness Stakes

What is AfroPreak?

It’s a Black Preakness Weekend Experience catered to the upscale African American market ages 25 to 60 in the Baltimore and Washington DC area.

It’s primarily known as an upscale AfroPreak lounge for African-American tastemakers who come to Baltimore for the annual running of the Preakness. It’s promoted and conceptualized by D Chase, Events 4 Good People, and LiRian Finney. The event aims to create a vibrant and welcoming atmosphere through curated spaces and community involvement. Derrick Chase, a co-organizer, emphasizes the growth and cultural significance of the event, showcasing Black excellence and community involvement. The lounge features an expanded footprint, including doubling the bar options to enhance the overall experience for attendees.

When is it held?

Preakness Stakes is usually the third Saturday of May, the weekend after Mother’s Day. It is the second leg of the Triple Crown after the Kentucky Derby and the Belmont Stakes.

How much does it cost?

Ticket costs vary from year to year. Tickets can be purchased via the Maryland Jockey Club Ticketmaster. My advice is to get them as soon as they go on sale as the event will sell out.

What should I wear?

Now, that’s a hard question to answer. But if you look at the photos, they are chic, colorful, and tasteful. Ladies usually wear fascinators, and men wear suits.

Can I bet on the races in the lounge?

Of course, you can bet; that’s the main reason for Preakness, to be on horses and look good while doing it.

Where should I park?

There are many options to park or to ride Uber or Lyft. I suggest you splurge and purchase Valet Parking and that way you can pull into Lot 1 or 2 and they will park your car for you. The cost is between $85 and $125 to park and you don’t have to look for a space and you can get to the party and races quicker.

Is it safe in the neighborhood?

It depends. During Preakness, Park Heights is probably one of the safest places in Baltimore, but don’t get caught slipping. Keep your purses and wallets close at all times, and I recommend leaving before it gets dark. Pro Tip: If you Valet Park and purchase tickets early, you don’t have to walk through the neighborhood.

What are the closest hotels by the Preakness?

One of the most upscale black-owned hotels is the Ivy Hotel, which is usually booked solid for Preakness. I would suggest the Baltimore Waterfront Marriott or the Four Seasons Hotel.

What happens in the tent?

Usually, there is food for sale, alcohol, and entertainment by a local Baltimore DJ. There is networking, cigar smoking, and top-tier vibes. Local politicians, including the mayor and governor, will attend this event.
